When to use the apostrophe?

You only use apostrophe in contractions and in the possessive case.

(Man bruger kun apostrof i sammentrækninger og ejefald.)

Examples of contractions: (Eksempler på sammentrækninger.)
he is ► he's
you are ► you're
does not ►doesn't

Examples of the possesive case: (Eksempler på ejefald.)
Peter's car (Peters bil)
the man's hat (mandens hat)
the boys' ball (drengenes bold)


You do not use the apostrophe in ordinary plural.
(Man bruger ikke apostrof i almindeligt flertal!)
Drengene spiller fodbold. ► The boys are playing football.
Hans søstre elsker at klatre i træer. ►His sisters love to climb trees.

You do not use the apostrophe in possesive adjectives or possesive pronouns either.
Man bruger heller ikke apostrof i ejestedord.
Hans kone er syg. ►His wife is ill.
Din søster er sød. ► Your sister is nice.

mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs.

Obs! Et ejestedord, nemlig one's, skal have apostrof. Det bruges ikke så tit.
Husk at skelne mellem støtteordet - ones - og ejestedordet - one's.

Examples:
Jeg elsker vingummibamser, især de røde. ► I love gummy bears, especially the red ones.
One has the right to one's own opinion.
